Six protesters arrested following confrontation with ICE officers at New Jersey detention center.
Protests erupted in front of the Delaney Hall detention center in Newark, New Jersey, on Wednesday night, as demonstrators clashed with armed federal immigration officers. This incident followed a series of peaceful demonstrations held over several days, during which advocates claimed that detainees at the facility were engaging in a hunger strike to protest poor living conditions.
The gathering included groups of protesters, many of whom donned gas masks and face coverings, forming a human chain to block entry to the detention center. Footage shared on social media depicted demonstrators using makeshift barricades made from trash cans, old mattresses, and umbrellas as they confronted officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The situation escalated as some protesters attempted to restrict access to the facility and hurled traffic cones at the law enforcement officials.
The ICE officers responded to the crowd’s actions with pepper spray and batons, seeking to disperse the group while attempting to clear a path for traffic. Tensions ran high as some drivers expressed frustration at being obstructed by the protesters. Photos from the scene showed detainees observing the protests from the windows of the facility, further intensifying the emotional weight of the situation.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security reported that six individuals were arrested for allegedly assaulting law enforcement during the confrontation. In a statement, the agency emphasized the seriousness of the situation, declaring that assaulting and obstructing ICE officers constitutes a felony offense, and reiterated their commitment to prosecuting such incidents to the fullest extent of the law.
Earlier on the same day, a delegation of Democratic members of Congress from New York City visited Delaney Hall as part of an oversight initiative. Representatives Jerry Nadler, Daniel Goldman, and Adriano Espaillat raised concerns regarding the facility’s conditions, stating that detainees are often served inadequate, spoiled food and that their medical needs go largely unaddressed.
In contrast, DHS officials have denied the existence of a hunger strike or any claims of abuse within the facility, arguing that critics of the detention center are merely engaging in political theatrics. The Delaney Hall detention center, managed by a private prison company, is located in an industrial area along Newark Bay, adding a complex layer to the ongoing discussions regarding immigration enforcement and the treatment of detainees in the U.S.
