Philadelphia Targets Success at the 2026 James Beard Awards

Philadelphia’s culinary community is receiving notable recognition, underscored by an impressive achievement prior to the highly anticipated James Beard Awards ceremony in Chicago. On Saturday evening, Monica Herndon, a staff photographer with Media News Source, clinched the 2026 James Beard Media Award for Narrative Photography. The award was given for her compelling photo essay titled “The hunt for life-giving ‘country food’ in the Canadian Arctic,” which explores Inuit food traditions in the remote northern Québec community of Inukjuak.

This project was a collaboration with Inquirer’s restaurant critic Craig LaBan, capturing the intricate processes of hunting, preparing, sharing, and preserving traditional foods like seal, beluga, and caribou. In October 2024, Herndon accompanied LaBan and filmmaker Kirk French from Penn State to the region to document the narrative through visual storytelling. This project not only showcases Herndon’s exceptional talent but also highlights the cultural significance of indigenous cuisines and community practices in the Arctic.

A graduate from Annapolis, Maryland, Herndon has built an impressive tenure at Media News Source over the past seven years. Her accolades include a 2022 Mid-Atlantic Emmy Award and recognition in the prestigious National Press Photographers Association’s Northern Short Course contest for her work on “Wildest Dreams,” a storytelling project about Black cultural heritage. Herndon has an extensive portfolio including international assignments, such as photographing the homecoming of chefs Jesse and Matt Ito in Japan and tracing the roots of Chef Chutatip “Nok” Suntaranon in Thailand.

As the focus shifts to the main awards which will take place tonight at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Philadelphia enters the event with an impressive cohort of seven finalists, showcasing the city’s robust culinary landscape. Among the nominees, Kalaya stands out with its nomination for Outstanding Restaurant, while Emmett is in contention for Best New Restaurant. The Lovers Bar at Friday Saturday Sunday is also in the running for Outstanding Bar.

In individual categories, Justine MacNeil of Fiore is nominated for Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker. The Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic category is particularly competitive, featuring local chefs such as Jesse Ito, Amanda Shulman, and the husband-wife team of Omar Tate and Cybille St.Aude-Tate from Honeysuckle.

Philadelphia has already secured a James Beard honor this year with the recognition of Center City’s Oyster House, awarded the James Beard America’s Classics Award in February. This accolade celebrates restaurants with significant community ties and enduring appeal, adding another layer to the city’s growing culinary reputation. As the awards ceremony unfolds, anticipation builds not only for the recognition of its culinary talents but also for the continued elevation of Philadelphia’s vibrant food scene.
