Halsey responds sharply to criticism from a YouTube reviewer following the resurfacing of an old review.

Singer Halsey recently took to social media to publicly criticize music critic Anthony Fantano following the resurfacing of his controversial review of her 2024 album, “The Great Impersonator.” In a pointed post on Sunday, Halsey labeled Fantano as a “raised-by-4chan edgelord bully,” highlighting her frustration with his dismissal of the serious health issues addressed in her music.

Responding to a disparaging comment from Fantano, the 31-year-old New Jersey-born artist declared that her most forgettable song would be remembered longer and more fondly than anything Fantano might produce in his career. Halsey defended her artistic expression on the album by stating that while Fantano perceives her work as “whiny” and “edgy,” she has faced genuine struggles, including a battle with health issues while creating music.

“The Great Impersonator: Deluxe,” which Halsey released on May 1, includes five previously unreleased tracks and has been described by critics as a poignant exploration of her life, particularly as she navigated the challenges posed by lupus erythematosus and T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder. These serious chronic conditions, diagnosed in 2022, coincided with a demanding touring schedule while she was also caring for her newborn. Notably, the latter diagnosis was announced on her 28th birthday. Both conditions are now in remission.

Despite the album’s critical acclaim, with many recognizing its emotional depth and vulnerability, Fantano dismissed it as an example of “main character syndrome.” He characterized the album as containing “messy demos” and suggested that Halsey was overly consumed with portraying her pain in a way he deemed indulgent. He assigned a rating of “light to decent 1” out of 10 to the album, a decision that sparked significant debate among fans and music critics alike.

The renewed discourse stems not only from the juxtaposition of Fantano’s scathing critique and Halsey’s reflective art but also from his recent interaction with fellow artist Olivia Rodrigo, which drew further scrutiny regarding his commentary on female artists. Halsey described the fear many women face in accurately conveying their struggles, especially in light of her own experiences. Ultimately, her remarks targeted the broader implications of how women’s narratives are received in the music industry.

In closing her messages, Halsey expressed well wishes for Fantano, indicating that the exchange was about more than mere artistic disagreement; it touched upon critical discussions about gender, health, and the authenticity of expression in the public sphere. Media News Source.
