Former Brazilian President Bolsonaro Released from Hospital After Three-Week Stay

Brazil’s former president, Jair Bolsonaro, has been discharged from the hospital after a three-week recovery from significant abdominal surgery. The right-wing leader, who served as the country’s head of state from 2019 to 2022, faced medical complications related to an intestinal obstruction prior to his release on Sunday.

Bolsonaro, now 70 years old, has encountered multiple health challenges since a stabbing incident in 2018, resulting in six surgeries and ongoing medical care. His recent surgery was necessitated by severe abdominal pain he experienced while attending a political event in the northeastern state of Rio Grande do Norte last month.

On the day of his discharge, Bolsonaro expressed optimism through social media, indicating his intention to partake in a rally organized by his supporters. He announced, “I’m going home renewed. My next challenge: joining the Peaceful March for Humanitarian Amnesty on Wednesday, May 7.” This demonstration aims to promote amnesty for his followers who participated in a protest that disrupted government activities after Bolsonaro’s electoral defeat by the current president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, in 2022.

Following the election, when Bolsonaro did not acknowledge his loss, unrest ensued, prompting discussions surrounding civil liberties and the nature of political dissent in Brazil. The former president has been advocating for amnesty concerning those involved in the January 2023 riots, during which his supporters attempted to storm government buildings.

In March, Brazil’s Supreme Court determined that he should be tried in connection with an alleged plot to overturn the 2022 election results. He and 33 co-defendants are under scrutiny for their involvement in this coup plot, which has drawn extensive media attention due to its serious implications for Brazilian democracy.
