Southlake officer honored for saving driver from burning car

A Southlake police officer has been honored with the department’s second-highest award following a dramatic rescue of a man from a burning vehicle. The incident, which took place on State Highway 114 and was captured on both dash and body camera footage, underscores the unintended dangers faced by law enforcement during routine traffic stops.

Corporal Joshua Swisher was awarded the “Meritorious Conduct Award” for his swift action during a high-pressure situation that occurred on June 7, according to a department statement. This award recognizes members of the department who demonstrate extraordinary courage and professionalism while confronting significant risks.

While executing a traffic stop for speeding, Swisher received an urgent dispatch about a nearby vehicle that was emitting substantial smoke. Upon locating the vehicle, he instructed the driver to pull over to the shoulder near the 900 block of eastbound SH 114. Less than a minute after the vehicle stopped, flames began to engulf it.

In the footage, Swisher is shown approaching the vehicle at approximately 7:39 p.m. His efforts to open the door were met with resistance as the handle broke off. Without hesitation, he equipped himself with gloves, smashed the window, and conducted the extraction of the driver in under 20 seconds.

He can be heard urging the driver to escape through the window, reassuring him with statements such as “Get out of the car. Come out through the window,” and confirming that no one else was inside the burning vehicle. Fire department personnel arrived shortly thereafter to extinguish the flames.

Fortunately, the driver emerged from the harrowing ordeal without serious injuries, thanks to Swisher’s timely intervention. Southlake Police Chief Ashleigh Casey remarked on the incident, emphasizing that it serves as a potent reminder of the unpredictable nature of police work. She stated that the situation showcases how every traffic stop carries an inherent risk that can escalate unexpectedly.

As of now, Corporal Swisher has not made himself available for interviews regarding the incident. His actions have been widely acknowledged as a testament to the dedication and bravery exhibited by law enforcement officers in the face of danger. This incident highlights not only the risks associated with police work but also the critical importance of preparedness and quick decision-making in emergency situations.
