20-year-old man dies in Brooklyn after being struck by a Toyota while riding an e-scooter.

A tragic incident in Brooklyn has resulted in the death of a 20-year-old man, identified as Ajpop Walter, after he was struck by a vehicle while riding a stand-up e-scooter. According to law enforcement officials, the accident occurred on Wednesday evening at approximately 5:16 p.m. Walter was traveling southbound on 14th Avenue when he was hit by a 2012 Toyota Sienna driven by a 56-year-old man, who was also proceeding south in the same direction. The collision took place near 77th Street in the Dyker Heights neighborhood.

Emergency medical personnel swiftly transported Walter to Maimonides Medical Center. Unfortunately, despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries later that day. Reports indicate that Walter lived just four blocks from the site of the collision. The driver of the Toyota remained at the scene and as of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

This unfortunate event marks the second fatal accident involving an e-scooter rider in Brooklyn within a short span of 24 hours. On Tuesday morning, Melba Jordan, a 45-year-old woman, was fatally injured while riding her e-scooter in Crown Heights. Jordan was traveling north on Franklin Avenue when she was struck by a 2007 Peterbilt dump truck making a right turn onto Pacific Street. Witnesses reported that the crash occurred shortly after 11 a.m. Emergency responders rushed Jordan to Kings County Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition but ultimately could not be saved. Similar to Walter’s case, the truck driver remained at the scene of the accident and has not been arrested.

The recent fatalities have raised significant concerns regarding the safety of e-scooter riders in urban environments, particularly in densely populated areas like Brooklyn. As e-scooter use continues to rise, local authorities may need to reevaluate regulations and implement measures to enhance the safety of riders and prevent further tragedies. The community mourns the loss of two lives in such close succession and calls for increased awareness and better infrastructure to ensure safer transportation options for all individuals navigating the streets of New York City.
