In an interview with ZezapTV, Moadh Ghannouchi expressed concern over the lack of information regarding his father’s health and whereabouts, stating that the last meeting with his lawyers took place prior to the incident on July 17. Efforts to visit him in the hospital were reportedly denied, leaving the family distressed and without confirmation of his condition amidst growing fears of his possible disappearance.
Moadh Ghannouchi characterized the situation as tantamount to an “enforced disappearance.” He disclosed that his 85-year-old father, who suffers from high blood pressure and breathes with difficulty, had been subjected to extreme heat in a prison lacking air conditioning. The family believes the circumstances of his confinement are deliberately punitive. “It was not enough to imprison him – they want to torment him further,” he remarked, expressing the emotional toll of the isolation on both his father and the family who had previously maintained regular visits.
Conflicting reports about Rached Ghannouchi’s condition have circulated on social media, with some alleging he is at different hospitals and others suggesting he has suffered a heart attack. However, Moadh stated that no formal communication from authorities has clarified these rumors. On his official Facebook page, Ghannouchi’s legal team demanded urgent updates about his health. A spokesperson for his political party, Ennahda, confirmed that the party is unaware of the specifics related to his medical status.
As a former speaker of parliament, Ghannouchi is recognized as one of the most prominent figures incarcerated during President Kais Saied’s government, which has faced criticism for its crackdown on dissent. He has been imprisoned since April 2023 after receiving a life sentence that has drawn accusations of being politically motivated—a claim the government refutes. Reports indicate that he lost consciousness in prison as temperatures soared to alarming levels, with one witness citing inhumane conditions reaching as high as 52°C (126°F).
