About 213,500 magnetic building toys branded as “Goody King” have been recalled in the United States due to significant ingestion hazards. This recall, announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), comes in response to alarming reports of at least two children undergoing surgical procedures after swallowing the magnets.
The CPSC’s notice indicates that the building cubes associated with these products can break or come apart, resulting in the risk of magnets detaching and becoming loose. Once swallowed, these magnets can adhere to each other or to other metallic objects, potentially causing blockages, twisting, perforations in the intestines, and in serious cases, blood poisoning or death.
Recognizing the severity of this issue, Yi Suen Commerce, the Hong Kong-based distributor of Goody King toys, has confirmed awareness of two incidents involving children who required surgical intervention to remove the swallowed magnets. Additionally, there have been at least 27 reported cases of the toys breaking or opening, highlighting the urgent need for consumer awareness and action.
