The whales made the extensive journey of over 2,500 miles with the logistical support of both animal care professionals and authorities from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Their transport was facilitated by a Qatar Airways Boeing 777 cargo plane, notably equipped to accommodate the unique needs of such large marine mammals. The meticulous planning involved in this operation underscores the commitment to animal welfare by various organizations, including SeaWorld and several aquariums across North America.
Upon arrival in San Diego shortly after 7 a.m. on a recent Saturday, the belugas were carefully positioned on padded stretchers specifically designed for their transport and placed into individual transport boxes filled with seawater at appropriate temperatures. This level of care was essential to minimize stress during the 12-hour journey, illustrating how animal welfare remains a priority in such operations.
SeaWorld officials emphasized the need for these belugas to acclimate to their new surroundings gradually.
