Lawmakers have officially designated September 25 as Dolly Parton Day.
Southern California’s admiration for Dolly Parton has been further solidified as state lawmakers recently designated September 25 as “Dolly Parton Day” across California. This proclamation was announced on Tuesday by Senator Shannon Grove, a Republican representing Bakersfield, in conjunction with Senate Bill 931, which serves as a tribute to Parton’s illustrious career, particularly referencing her iconic song and film “9 to 5.”
In her announcement, Senator Grove emphasized Parton’s unique ability to unite people through her music and highlighted her significant contributions to children’s literacy. She discussed the impact of the Imagination Library, a program established by Parton in 1995, which provides free books to children from birth to age five. Grove noted that this initiative has fostered a love for reading among countless children in California, stating that over 182,000 youngsters are currently enrolled in the program, which enjoys statewide availability in 45 of the state’s 58 counties. Additionally, California has become one of the pioneering states to offer bilingual book options in English and Spanish, thereby enhancing the program’s accessibility to a broader audience.
The bill received joint authorship from Senator John Laird, a Democrat from Santa Cruz. Laird echoed Grove’s sentiments, emphasizing that Parton’s legacy extends beyond her musical achievements. He pointed out that through the Imagination Library, Parton has made an indelible mark on the lives of millions of children, instilling in them a passion for reading from a young age. Laird also commended Parton’s advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community, noting her commitment to ensuring dignity and respect for all individuals.
Dolly Parton is widely recognized as one of the most successful country music artists in history, with a career that spans over six decades. Her song “9 to 5,” which she composed for the 1980 film of the same name, remains a cultural touchstone, showcasing her talents not just as a musician but also as a performer alongside iconic actresses Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.
As California officially honors Dolly Parton on September 25, it serves not only as a recognition of her contributions to music and entertainment but also as a celebration of her philanthropic efforts that are changing lives.
