The recent eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau in Indonesia has dramatically impacted air travel, with volcanic ash disrupting operations at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport near Jakarta. Flights have been suspended at Indonesia’s primary airport, Soekarno-Hatta International, following the detection of volcanic ash due to the erupting Mount Anak Krakatau. On Sunday morning, airport officials announced that operations would remain halted until 1:30 PM local time (06:30 GMT) in light of the volcano’s increased eruptive activity, which is located more than 150 kilometers (93 miles) away from the capital.
Mount Anak Krakatau, which began showing signs of activity on Friday, has generated a spectacular display, sending lava fountains into the air and producing booming sounds audible up to 700 kilometers (435 miles) away. The volcanological agency has reported additional eruptions since then, with the Indonesian meteorological agency, BMKG, indicating ash plumes reaching heights of 6,000 meters (20,000 feet) on the Java side and as high as 15,000 meters (50,000 feet) on the Sumatra side.
The airport had previously experienced a suspension of flights, which was expected to conclude at 5:30 AM local time (22:30 GMT Saturday), impacting 33 flights—16 of which were international and seven had delays, according to Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation. Director General of Civil Aviation Lukman F Laisa emphasized that safety is the top priority in decisions affecting aviation, including flight schedule adjustments by airlines. Continuous monitoring is being conducted in collaboration with various stakeholders, including air navigation services and the meteorological agency, to assess the situation.
Among the airlines affected by this incident was Singapore Airlines, which canceled two flights to and from Jakarta and postponed two additional flights on Sunday. Fortunately, Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency confirmed there is no immediate tsunami risk associated with the volcanic activity.
Historically, Mount Anak Krakatau emerged from the sea in the 1920s, following the devastating 1883 eruption of Krakatoa, a volcanic event that remains one of the deadliest in history. Frequent eruptions have occurred since, including a significant eruption in 2018 that not only resulted in a partial collapse of the volcano’s crater but also triggered a tsunami that tragically claimed over 400 lives along the coasts of Java and Sumatra.
As volcanic ash poses considerable risks to aviation—capable of damaging jet engines and severely affecting visibility—authorities continue to prioritize passenger safety amid these natural events.
