A disturbing incident unfolded late Friday night for a woman in Lake Balboa when she returned home only to discover her residence had been burglarized. Adding to the distressing situation, her German shepherd had been pepper-sprayed by the intruders, a tactic that is becoming increasingly common among thieves in Los Angeles and beyond.

The Los Angeles Police Department’s West Valley officers, alongside a police helicopter, were dispatched to the scene in the 7300 block of Leescott Avenue around 10:15 p.m. However, by the time law enforcement arrived, the suspects had already fled, leaving behind a chaotic scene. Upon entering the home, officers were met with the overwhelming and acrid odor of pepper spray, which had been used on the family pet.

Reports from a freelance videographer indicated that the dog suffered significantly from the effects of the spray. Such treatment of animals during burglaries is part of a disturbing trend where criminals attempt to incapacitate pets that might deter their unlawful activities. Notably, a similar incident occurred in March 2016 in Mar Vista, where a dog sustained severe eye damage due to the same cruel tactic. In another alarming case in July 2024 in Encino, guard dogs at a residence were also pepper-sprayed during a home invasion.

Fortunately, the situation on Friday night concluded positively. Upon her arrival home, the owner was relieved to learn her German shepherd had survived the ordeal, albeit with some distress from the pepper spray. Video evidence captured the resilient pet as it emerged from the house, tail wagging and seemingly recovering from the frightening experience.

As of now, it remains unclear if any items were stolen from the residence, leaving investigators from the LAPD’s West Valley Division to determine the extent of the burglary and track down the suspects involved. Over the past year, various neighborhoods in the San Fernando Valley have experienced a troubling rise in residential burglaries, prompting increased police presence and community vigilance.
