NEW YORK – In a significant literary event, the private journal of Pope Francis is set to be published this fall, providing an unprecedented insight into the inner life of one of the most influential religious figures of the modern era. The book, titled “The Private Diary of Pope Francis,” will be available in English and four additional languages beginning November 24. The publication comes from Image, an imprint of the Penguin Random House Christian Publishing Group, in collaboration with Libreria Editrice Vaticana, the Vatican’s official publishing house.

This collection of writings encompasses a period from December 1992, two decades prior to Francis’s ascension to the papacy, until August 2024, just months before his passing. The English edition, translated from the original Spanish, has been meticulously prepared by Sister Bernadette Reis and includes annotations and editorial contributions from Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, who currently leads the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, Pope Francis made history as the first Latin American pope, recognized for his approachable demeanor and commitment to humility. His papacy was characterized by a focus on social justice, exemplified by his visits to impoverished regions and his support for marginalized Christian communities. During the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, he delivered a poignant message from a vacant St. Peter’s Square, urging humanity to come together in mutual support during a time of crisis.

However, Pope Francis’s tenure was not without contention. His outreach to LGBTQ+ Catholics drew criticism from conservative factions within the Church, and his comments regarding allegations against Chilean Bishop Juan Barros ignited a fierce backlash. Notably, he sparked debate in 2016 by challenging U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump’s stance on immigration, asserting that constructing a wall to exclude migrants was incompatible with Christian values.

Pope Francis was also an accomplished author, with notable works including “The Name of God Is Mercy” and the memoir “Hope.” He passed away on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy marked by compassion and reform. The upcoming publication of his diary promises to shed light on his hopes, fears, struggles, and prayers throughout his remarkable life and papacy, offering readers a deeper understanding of the man behind the title.
