Florida art dealer sentenced to nearly 4 years in prison for selling fake Andy Warhol artworks.

A South Florida art dealer has received a nearly four-year federal prison sentence for orchestrating a scheme that involved the sale of counterfeit artworks attributed to celebrated artist Andy Warhol. Leslie Howard Roberts, 63, was sentenced to three years and ten months in a Miami federal court this month after admitting guilt to conspiracy charges related to wire fraud. In addition to his prison sentence, Roberts has been ordered to repay nearly .6 million that he profited from the fraudulent scheme.

Roberts, who operates Miami Fine Art Gallery in Coconut Grove, was arrested in April 2025. During the proceedings, court documents detailed how he misrepresented several pieces of art as authentic creations of Warhol, whose influence in the art world remains significant. Prosecutors alleged that Roberts falsely claimed he sourced these artworks directly from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and provided fabricated invoices to support his claims.

U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida Jason Reding Quiñones emphasized the betrayal of trust that Roberts enacted. He noted that Roberts exploited the confidence that collectors place in art dealers regarding the authenticity of the artworks they purchase. This case underscores the vulnerabilities within the high-stakes art market, where authenticity is paramount.

Further complicating the situation, another individual, Carlos Rodriguez Melendez, was implicated in the scheme. He reportedly pretended to be an employee of a New York-based auction house and wrongfully verified the art as genuine, thereby helping to mask the forgeries. Rodriguez Melendez pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud last year and was subsequently sentenced to probation.

This incident is part of a troubling trend in Florida, where art fraud has gained notoriety. In 2023, another art dealer, Daniel Elie Bouaziz, received a sentence of two years and three months in federal prison for his role in selling counterfeit Warhol artworks. Bouaziz owned two galleries in Palm Beach County and had pleaded guilty to a count of money laundering, with prosecutors opting to dismiss 16 additional counts of fraud and embezzlement.

Andy Warhol, an iconic American visual artist and filmmaker, is most famously associated with the pop art movement that flourished in the 1960s. His works continue to capture the imagination of collectors and art enthusiasts, making instances of forgery all the more concerning in the art community. As these cases illustrate, vigilance and due diligence are essential for buyers in navigating the complexities of art authentication.
