Nationwide recall of nearly 1.6 million pounds of sausage and bacon due to improper storage practices.
A significant recall involving nearly 1.6 million pounds of meat and poultry products has been issued nationwide due to concerns regarding improper storage temperatures. This warning was released on Saturday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The recall involves various products manufactured by Massachusetts-based Kayem Foods, which are sold under a variety of brand names. The affected products were identified as having been stored and shipped between June 7 and October 14, according to a recent statement from the company.
Included in the recall are a wide array of meat products such as sausages, bacon, hot dogs, deli meats, turkey items, and meatballs. The brands associated with these products encompass Kayem, Al Fresco, Genoa, McKenzie, Triple M, Deutschmacher, Jordan’s, Essem, and Winnisimmet. Consumers can identify the recalled items by their USDA inspection marks which bear the following numbers: EST. M/P 7839, EST. P 20935A, and EST. M 9520.
The USDA disclosed that this recall was prompted by a report from a retail customer on October 1, who noted that certain products arrived at their location at elevated temperatures. While the agency has confirmed that there have been no reports of illness related to the products in question, the recall has been classified as Class I, the USDA’s most severe risk category. This classification indicates that there is a reasonable probability that consumption of the affected products could result in serious health consequences or even death.
The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has expressed particular concern that some of these products may still be present in consumers’ homes. Individuals who have purchased these items are urged not to consume them. Instead, they should either discard the products or return them to the place of purchase.
Consumers seeking additional information on food safety matters can contact the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-674-6854. Moreover, reports regarding any issues with meat, poultry, or egg products can be submitted to the USDA via the official complaint website.
As the situation develops, consumers are advised to remain vigilant and stay informed regarding this significant recall to ensure their safety.
