Man dies in NYPD custody following assault on employee at New York City disability center.
A tragic incident unfolded in Harlem on Friday evening when a 33-year-old man died while in custody of the New York Police Department. The events leading to his death began around 5:45 p.m. at the Quality Services for the Autism Community (QSAC) center, located on East 129th Street near Fifth Avenue. According to police reports, the man was reportedly assaulting a female worker at the facility when other staff intervened, restraining him and bringing him to the ground.
Emergency responders arrived to find the man unconscious, still pinned down by staff members. Upon his arrival at the scene, the NYPD officers initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) while waiting for medical personnel. The man was subsequently transported to Harlem Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at 6:20 p.m. The identity of the man has not been disclosed pending notification of his family, and an autopsy has been scheduled by the city’s Medical Examiner to ascertain the cause of death.
The female employee who was assaulted also received medical attention for minor injuries sustained during the incident. The QSAC, described on its website as a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals with autism and their families in New York City and Long Island, aims to provide person-centered services to enhance the independence and potential of its clients.
While details surrounding the incident remain unclear, including whether the deceased man was a client at the center or had any connection to its services, QSAC has not responded to inquiries seeking further information. Consequently, due to the unfolding circumstances, the NYPD’s Force Investigation Division has launched a probe into the incident, as the man was briefly in police custody before his death.
This unfortunate event raises questions about the treatment of individuals with developmental disabilities and the protocols followed during emergency interventions. As investigations continue, the community remains focused on understanding the dynamics at play while ensuring the well-being of vulnerable populations within its care.
