Boyz II Men from Philadelphia is officially transitioning to country music.

Boyz II Men, the renowned vocal group recognized as the best-selling R&B ensemble in history, is set to venture into the realm of country music. The trio, composed of Shawn Stockman, Nathan Morris, and Wanya Morris, has officially signed with Warner Records, a Nashville-based major label, and intends to release a country album next year.

This unexpected transition from R&B to country may come as a surprise to many fans, especially given the group’s illustrious legacy rooted in rhythm and blues. Boyz II Men’s debut album, “Cooleyhighharmony,” released in 1991, alongside their 1994 follow-up, “II,” collectively sold over 20 million copies, solidifying their place in music history.

The intersection of R&B artists with country music is not unprecedented, as numerous mainstream artists have crossed genres in pursuit of the expansive American country audience. Iconic figures such as Ray Charles have been bridging the gap since the 1960s, followed by contemporary artists such as Nelly, LL Cool J, and Darius Rucker. Beyoncé has also collaborated with rising Black country artists, reflecting the genre’s evolving landscape.

The members of Boyz II Men have expressed their deep admiration for the storytelling aspect of country music, which they find resonates with their musical sensibilities. The group highlights the importance of learning and adapting in their artistic journey. Despite their decades-long tenure in the music industry, they remain committed to exploring diverse musical styles and expanding their creative horizons.

Historically, Boyz II Men has embraced country influences in their music. In 2019, they collaborated with the bluegrass band Steep Canyon Rangers on the track “Be Still Mores” and updated their classic hit “Motownphilly” in partnership with country artist Brett Young. More recently, they participated in the Barefoot Country Festival in Wildwood, New Jersey, and teamed up with country-pop outfit Lady A for the single “I Love The One.” Their performance of John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” during a Fourth of July celebration in Nashville further underscores their affinity for the genre.

While their upcoming country album remains untitled, it is poised for release under Warner Brothers Nashville in 2027. Boyz II Men’s foray into country music signifies a bold new chapter in their already storied career, promising to blend their rich R&B heritage with the heartfelt narratives that define country music.
