Deptford PTO member faces charges for allegedly stealing over ,000 from school activity funds.

A member of the Department of Deptford’s Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) has been charged with stealing more than ,000 in funds that were intended to benefit local schools. Police confirmed the arrest of 36-year-old Tara A. Webb on Monday, following a comprehensive three-month investigation into the alleged embezzlement.

Deptford Police Chief Joseph J. Smith announced that Webb surrendered to authorities without incident and is currently being held at the Salem County jail. She has been charged with theft by unlawful taking, and the investigation remains ongoing, according to police officials.

In a letter addressed to parents on Tuesday, Deptford School Superintendent Kevin Kanauss, alongside police detective Maureen Packer, indicated that the alleged misappropriation of funds pertains to the PTOs associated with Central, Pine Acres, and Shady Lane Schools. While the letter did not specify Webb by name, it made it clear that neither the district nor any district employees were implicated in the wrongdoing. Detective Packer emphasized that only the individual who has been charged is believed to be involved in the alleged theft.

The letter elaborated that aside from the theft of funds, Webb allegedly neglected to pay thousands of dollars in outstanding invoices linked to prior PTO activities. This failure to fulfill financial obligations raises further concerns about the management and oversight of funds within the organization.

In light of these events, educational officials expressed their understanding of the serious implications this situation carries for the school community. The letter highlighted that the well-being and trust of students, families, and staff remain the utmost priority of the department.

Parent-Teacher Organizations typically play a pivotal role in fundraising to support school budgets, providing resources for essential supplies, materials for teachers, and funding enrichment programs that enhance the educational experience. The alleged actions of this PTO member could undermine the trust and efficacy of such organizations, prompting calls for increased transparency and accountability in fundraising efforts.

As the investigation continues, it remains unclear whether Webb has secured legal representation. As this story unfolds, it is crucial for community members to stay informed about developments that may impact their schools and the integrity of fundraising initiatives in the future.
