Body discovered in Long Island pool likely belongs to fugitive suspected of murdering his father.

Authorities have reported that a Long Island man, recently identified as a suspect in his father’s murder, may have been discovered deceased in a residential swimming pool. Matthew Zoll, aged 23, has been missing since November 2024, following the fatal stabbing of his father, Joseph Zoll, 61. Police had classified Matthew as a primary suspect shortly after the incident, which led to an extensive multi-week search into his whereabouts.

On Sunday, a homeowner in East Shoreham made a chilling discovery while preparing to reopen their pool for summer use. Upon removing the cover, they found a body, which investigators suspect belongs to Matthew Zoll. Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina expressed that there is a strong possibility that the deceased individual is Zoll, although the identification remains pending until DNA analysis is completed.

Authorities uncovered the body after Joseph Zoll was found fatally stabbed in their shared residence in Rocky Point on November 9. At the time of the grim discovery, Matthew was not at home, leading investigators to name him as the suspect the following day. The nature of the crime prompted police to launch a thorough investigation, which included focusing their search efforts on nearby areas, particularly the expansive Brookhaven State Park that spans roughly 1,600 acres and is located near the accident site where Matthew reportedly crashed a vehicle shortly after the altercation with his father.

The vehicle collision occurred at the intersection of the William Floyd Parkway and New York State Route 25A, close to the northern shore of Long Island. Reports indicate that the crash site is approximately half a mile from where the body was later found. Media News Source has noted that the deceased had been in the pool for an extended period, further complicating the investigation.

Matthew Zoll had been diagnosed with schizophrenia prior to the events surrounding his father’s death and his subsequent disappearance. In April 2024, he was briefly reported missing but was located shortly after. As the investigation proceeds, community members have expressed disbelief and concern about the circumstances surrounding both deaths, highlighting the tragic turn of events in this case. The local authorities are awaiting the autopsy results and DNA confirmation, which are expected to shed more light on this complex and unsettling situation.
