Train derails near Russia-Ukraine border, resulting in at least seven fatalities.

A tragic incident occurred in the Bryansk region of Russia, where a passenger train derailed, resulting in the loss of at least seven lives and injuring around 30 others. The train collided with a bridge that collapsed due to what local officials characterized as “illegal interference.” This unfortunate event took place late Saturday and has drawn significant attention to safety measures in the region.

Bryansk Governor Alexander Bogomaz confirmed the fatalities through a post on Telegram, noting that among the injured are two children, with several individuals listed in serious condition. Reports indicate that the train driver was also among those killed in this devastating incident.

According to Russian federal road transportation agency Rosavtodor, the bridge that collapsed was situated above the railway tracks, leading to the catastrophic derailment of the train, which was traveling from the town of Klimov to Moscow. This bridge collapse occurred near the village of Vygonichi, approximately 100 kilometers from the border with Ukraine.

Rescue operations are underway, with emergency services working diligently to locate passengers trapped within the damaged rail vehicle. Temporary accommodations have been established at a local school to assist those affected by the disaster. Moscow Railway, in a communication on Telegram, attributed the bridge’s collapse to unauthorized interference in transport operations but did not provide further details about the nature of this interference.

Preliminary reports circulated by Russia’s Baza Telegram channel suggested, without substantiation, that the bridge may have been deliberately destroyed. This speculation arises amidst a context where train derailments, particularly of freight vessels, have occurred in regions bordering Ukraine, linked to ongoing tensions and military activities.

Following the bridge collapse, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that Ukraine’s air defense units were actively repelling a Russian air attack on the capital. Earlier in the day, Russian strikes had resulted in casualties in Ukraine, underscoring the continuing volatility in the region since the onset of the conflict three years ago.

In light of previous crossed-border engagements, President Donald Trump has called for dialogue between Moscow and Kyiv. Russia has put forward a proposal for further talks between the two nations, indicating a willingness to engage diplomatically after the recent strains. However, Ukraine has yet to respond definitively, seeking clarity on Russian conditions before committing to the discussions.

This incident emphasizes the critical need for enhanced safety protocols and ongoing dialogue in order to secure peace and stability in the region.
