Jonathan Mayers, the influential founder of notable music festivals such as Bonnaroo and Outside Lands, has passed away at the age of 51. The cause of his death remains undisclosed.

Graduating from Tulane University in 1995, Mayers embarked on a career in the music industry with positions at the illustrious venue Tipitina’s and the annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. His passion for promoting music events led him to co-found the promotion and events company Superfly. In 2002, he launched the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Tennessee, which has since evolved into one of the leading music festivals in the United States, attracting thousands of attendees annually. Bonnaroo has set a benchmark for festival culture, influencing the establishment of events like New York City’s Governor’s Ball and the All Things Go Festival.

In 2008, Mayers expanded his entrepreneurial ventures with the creation of Outside Lands in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, which showcases a wide array of musical talent and culinary experiences. Continuing to innovate, he introduced Clusterfest in 2017, a comedy festival that focused on immersive experiences tied to popular television shows such as “Friends,” “Seinfeld,” and “The Office.”

Mayers left Superfly in 2021, shifting his focus to Core City Detroit, an ambitious project intended to provide artists with a dedicated creative space that merges production facilities with living accommodations. This initiative aimed to support both local and national artists in their endeavors.

Mayers’ contributions to the music and festival industry have left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape. His former partners at Superfly expressed profound sorrow at his passing, reflecting on his integral role in the company’s history and legacy. They described him as a beloved member of their community, known for his sharp wit, infectious smile, and ability to brighten any room.

As the music industry mourns this loss, Mayers’ impact on festival culture and community engagement will be remembered and cherished by artists and fans alike. He was not just a pioneer in the field; he was a friend and inspiration to many. His legacy will continue to resonate within the vibrant tapestry of live music and festivals around the world.
