Designer of Suraya, Kalaya, Maison Rose, and other brands reveals their distinctive style and creative vision.
In the vibrant neighborhood of Fishtown, Philadelphia, an array of popular establishments such as Suraya, Kalaya, Archway Hotel Residence, Maison Rose, Pizzeria Beddia, The Bend, and Picnic share a common thread: the discerning vision and creativity of designer and entrepreneur Katherine Lundberg. Since her arrival in Philadelphia in 2015 as a design manager for Anthropologie, Lundberg has carved a niche for herself in the region’s burgeoning design scene.
Lundberg’s journey in Fishtown began with an instant rapport with the area, which she found rich in industrial architecture ripe for redevelopment. Her appreciation for the neighborhood’s aesthetic led her to seek out a home that resonated with her design sensibilities—modern, open-concept spaces that required minimal alterations. This quest eventually introduced her to Roland Kassis, the dynamic founder of Kassis & Co., who was at the time developing Suraya, a Lebanese restaurant that has gained considerable popularity.
Initially coming on as a freelance designer, Lundberg invigorated the project’s vision, embracing the space’s industrial roots while infusing it with warmth and elegance. Her approach combined problem-solving with a keen aesthetic sense, balancing a crisp and timeless design with softer elements. As her work flourished, Lundberg transitioned to a full-time role with Kassis, taking on additional projects within his business portfolio, including R&D Cocktail Bar, Pizzeria Beddia, and El Techo.
The pandemic, while disruptive, offered Lundberg a crucial opportunity to delve deeper into her projects, particularly with Archway, an innovative hotel concept that emphasizes an invisible service model. Here, Lundberg showcased her ability to handle a range of responsibilities, from design to project management, while also cultivating partnerships with various brands.
As of 2023, Lundberg’s accomplishments have further solidified her place in the industry, earning her a partnership with Kassis and the establishment of Briquette Studio, her own design firm focused on real estate development and brand identity. Her projects, such as Kalaya, exemplify her talent for translating clients’ visions into tangible realities.
Continuing her work at Kassis & Co., Lundberg is actively involved in multiple upcoming developments, including Maison Rose and The Bend, both of which emphasize thoughtful design principles to foster vibrant community spaces. With aspirations of broadening her impact beyond Fishtown, Lundberg remains committed to creating compelling environments that represent a harmonious blend of functionality and style, all the while driving the evolution of her beloved neighborhood. This dedication to development and design echoes her belief in the importance of creating lively, well-rounded communities.
