Monterrey, Inter Milan, Dortmund, and Fluminense advance to the last 16 of the Club World Cup.

Monterrey and Inter Milan Advance in Club World Cup
Mexican football club Monterrey solidified their position in the knockout stages of the Club World Cup with an impressive 4-0 victory over Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. This dominant performance, marked by three goals scored within an eight-minute spell in the first half, secured their entry into the last 16 of the tournament.
The clash took place on Wednesday, where Monterrey showcased remarkable skill, greatly aided by stunning long-range goals from players Nelson Deossa and Jesús Corona, along with German Berterame’s composed finish. Deossa opened the scoring with a swerving shot from distance in the 30th minute, followed shortly by Berterame extending the lead. Corona delivered the standout goal of the match just before halftime, and Berterame ensured Monterrey’s comfortable advancement by netting a fourth in stoppage time.
Monterrey’s head coach, Domenec Torrent, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, highlighting their strong defensive display and their ability to secure a clean sheet, particularly against a challenging group of opponents. This victory sets the stage for a knockout match against Borussia Dortmund, where Monterrey will aim to continue their impressive run.
Meanwhile, Inter Milan maintained their composure against River Plate, triumphing 2-0, despite a fierce contest that saw River Plate reduced to nine men. This victory not only bolsters Inter Milan’s confidence as the Champions League runners-up but also sets them up for a subsequent match against Fluminense.
Inter Milan’s Francesco Esposito scored his debut goal for the club, giving them a crucial lead. Alessandro Bastoni later secured the win with a decisive strike. Coach Christian Chivu noted that his team initially faced challenges posed by River Plate’s intense gameplay but swiftly elevated their performance in the second half to control the match.
Despite the enthusiasm of River Plate’s supporters, both Argentinian clubs in the tournament—River and their rival Boca Juniors—were eliminated. River Plate coach Marcelo Gallardo acknowledged the disappointment of their fans who passionately supported the team throughout the tournament.
In Group F, Fluminense managed a 0-0 draw against South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns, which was sufficient for them to claim the second spot behind Borussia Dortmund. Unfortunately, Sundowns, along with the other African clubs participating in the tournament, exited without advancing, but their efforts brought pride to their supporters. Coach Miguel Cardoso expressed confidence in the growth and resilience of their team, indicating that they leave the competition with elevated morale.
As the tournament continues, attention will turn to forthcoming matches, including a highly anticipated clash between Manchester City and Juventus, as well as Real Madrid’s bid for advancement against RB Salzburg.
