Johannesburg, South Africa – On June 27, 1985, four Black men embarked on a fateful journey from Port Elizabeth, now known as Gqeberha, to Cradock after completing community organizing efforts in their area. The individuals—teachers Fort Calata, 29, and Matthew Goniwe, 38, school principal Sicelo Mhlauli, 36, and railway worker Sparrow Mkonto, 34—were apprehended by apartheid police at a roadblock.
