Alejandro Escovedo announced as headliner in the final wave of acts for the Philadelphia Folk Festival lineup.
The Philadelphia Folk Festival has unveiled its impressive lineup of headliners for the upcoming event scheduled to take place from August 15 to 17, 2025. Among the prominent acts, the Mexican American rock musician Alejandro Escovedo is set to headline. Escovedo, who has roots in Austin, Texas, brings a rich musical legacy that spans multiple decades and genres.
Joining Escovedo on the main stage will be an array of artists, including Cedric Watson et Bijou Creole, a band led by Louisiana’s San Felipe-born accordionist Cedric Watson. Known for their unique blend of blues and R&B-infused zydeco, this group promises to offer a vibrant performance.
The lineup also features renowned Irish fiddler Eileen Ivers, celebrated for her role as a founding member of the acclaimed band Cherish the Ladies. Additionally, the Gibson Brothers, a bluegrass ensemble hailing from Upstate New York, will contribute their veteran expertise to the festival’s soundscape.
From Miami, the Lee Boys will present their soulful Sacred Steel music, adding an element of funk and soul. Meanwhile, the husband-and-wife folk duo Ordinary Elephant, comprised of Crystal and Pete Damore, will share their insights through their musical artistry. Notably, local Philadelphia songwriter John Flynn is set to both perform and emcee the event, further enriching the festival’s connection to the community.
Alejandro Escovedo’s career is marked by a diverse musical journey that began in the 1970s with the punk band the Nuns and has since evolved through various genres, including cowpunk and Tex-Mex rock. His extensive collaborations, including with luminaries such as Bruce Springsteen and John Cale, highlight his versatility and sustained relevance in the music scene.
In recent performances, Escovedo has focused on poignant themes such as the immigrant experience, collaborating with Italian band Don Antonio. His recent show at City Winery Philadelphia exemplified his storytelling ability, blending personal narratives with his musical compositions.
To complement the newly announced acts, a number of previously confirmed musicians will also grace the stage. This includes notable figures like John Gorka, Irish traditionalist Solas, and the dynamic hip-hop duo Kuf Knotz and Christine Elise. The festival will also feature bluegrass player Alison Brown and singer-songwriter John Moreland, among others.
