Man charged in Norristown crash that resulted in one death and injuries to a wife and two children.
A 22-year-old man has been charged with homicide by vehicle while under the influence following a tragic two-vehicle accident in Norristown on June 1. This incident resulted in the death of Mahilamandiram Chiku and left his wife and two children with severe injuries, according to statements from Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele.
Allan Tariq Cole, a resident of Norristown, was taken into custody on Thursday. He faces multiple charges, including involuntary manslaughter and other related offenses, associated with the fatal incident and the injuries of five additional individuals involved.
Cole is currently being held at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility on bail set at ,000. A preliminary hearing for the case has been scheduled for August 8.
The accident occurred around 10:35 a.m., when Norristown police responded to a collision at the intersection of Dekalb and Basin Streets. Upon arrival, authorities found Chiku trapped in the driver’s seat of a Kia Soul. He was subsequently transported to Jefferson Einstein Montgomery Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Chiku’s wife, Remya Karathattuparambu, was airlifted to Temple University Hospital for treatment. The couple’s two children, aged 8 years and 5 months, were located secured in child safety seats and were taken to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for care.
Cole, driving a silver BMW, also sustained injuries and, along with two passengers in his vehicle, received treatment at Jefferson Einstein Montgomery Hospital.
Investigators reported that Cole was allegedly driving at a reckless speed of 95 mph in a zone that has a posted limit of 25 mph. According to authorities, Mahilamandiram Chiku was attempting to navigate through the intersection when the Kia Soul was struck by Cole’s vehicle. The collision forcefully propelled the Kia into a pole, causing it to travel more than 100 feet from the initial point of impact.
Further analysis through blood testing indicated that Cole was allegedly under the influence of marijuana at the time of the crash, leading to additional legal ramifications. The case highlights ongoing concerns about reckless driving and the dangers of impaired driving pertaining to public safety.
As investigations continue, families and communities are left grappling with the far-reaching consequences of this tragedy. The legal proceedings ahead will aim to address the serious charges brought against Cole and provide a measure of accountability for the victim’s family.
