Dubai chocolate gains popularity in Philadelphia; find out where to purchase it locally.

In 2023, a TikTok video featuring an influencer enjoying a FIX Dessert Chocolatier chocolate bar ignited a global craze, garnering over 7 million likes. This viral moment has since inspired culinary entrepreneurs in Philadelphia, particularly Bishara Kuttab and Zohra Saibi, who, in 2024, expanded their offerings at LeSouk Market to include a diverse menu of Dubai chocolate products that celebrate this new trend. The market now sells out rapidly, showcasing six variations of this sensational dessert.

The original Dubai chocolate, which includes the signature bar “Can’t Get Knafeh Of It,” was created by Dubai-based company FIX Dessert, founded by Sarah Hamouda, who sought to satisfy her cravings for traditional Middle Eastern flavors during her pregnancy. This innovative chocolate combines milk chocolate with pistachio cream, tahini, and crunchy pieces of knafeh, a phyllo dough. This delightful creation has inspired a broader category of desserts now commonly referred to as “Dubai chocolate.”

For Kuttab, the emergence of Dubai chocolate resonates deeply with his Palestinian heritage, as ingredients like kataifi and pistachios are staples in Arab cuisine. The success of Dubai chocolate in Philadelphia can be attributed to the cultural connections it fosters, as highlighted by Nima Etemadi, owner of Cake Life Bake Shop. Etemadi’s interpretation infuses Middle Eastern flavors into traditional desserts, such as his rendition of Dubai chocolate within a Rice Krispie treat, appealing to local palates.

Several establishments across Philadelphia are now offering their unique takes on Dubai chocolate. Haraz Coffee House, Philadelphia’s first Yemeni coffee shop, serves Dubai chocolate as triangle-shaped cakes, brownies, and dessert cups topped with fresh strawberries and pistachio cream. Cake Life Bake Shop provides a delightful weekend special featuring Dubai chocolate Krispie rice squares. Meanwhile, Paris Baguette entices patrons with mochi doughnuts drizzled with pistachio and chocolate, alongside a chocolate tart embellished with crushed pistachios.

LeSouk Market offers an extensive Dubai chocolate menu, with options ranging from strawberry cups smothered in pistachio cream to a decadent Dubai sundae comprised of soft serve ice cream adorned with a medley of toppings. Newcomer Aroma Bakery, located in Old City, adds to the variety with their inventive Dubai cheesecake, enhancing the selection available to dessert enthusiasts.

Weckerly’s Ice Cream has also embraced the trend, introducing a special flavor that incorporates shredded phyllo dough and pistachio cream, making it a notable addition to the local ice cream scene. Additionally, Apricot Stone restaurant completes the lineup by offering a thick chocolate bar layered with kataifi and pistachios, a perfect companion to their rich Armenian coffee.

As demand for Dubai chocolate continues to rise, Philadelphia has emerged as a hub for innovative interpretations of this viral sensation, reflecting the city’s diverse culinary landscape. Whether you are drawn in by the creamy textures or the rich flavors, there is no shortage of options for those looking to indulge in this in-demand dessert trend.
