Abraham Quintanilla, father and manager of Tejano singer Selena, has passed away at the age of 86.

Abraham Quintanilla Jr., the esteemed record producer and father of the late Tejano music icon Selena, has passed away at the age of 86. His family announced the news on Saturday, with his son, Abraham Quintanilla III, sharing the information via an Instagram post that included a heartfelt remembrance and a tribute to Pedro Infante’s song “Cien Años.”

The circumstances surrounding his passing have not been fully disclosed. According to reports, the medical examiner’s office in Corpus Christi, Texas, has been notified of his death and stated it would not accept jurisdiction, indicating a lack of suspicion regarding foul play or trauma.

Born on February 20, 1939, in Corpus Christi, Quintanilla initially sought a career in music, performing with the group Los Dinos before stepping away in the late 1960s to dedicate more time to his family. On June 8, 1963, he married Marcella Samora, with whom he had three children: A.B., Suzette, and Selena.

Recognizing Selena’s exceptional singing talent, Quintanilla reactivated Los Dinos as a family band, which included A.B. on bass and Suzette on drums, along with Selena’s husband, Chris Pérez, on guitar. This ensemble found significant success during the late 1980s, propelling Selena to become a dominant figure in the Tejano music genre. Selena gained widespread recognition after winning the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year, an accolade she would secure a total of 11 times.

Tragically, Selena’s promising career was cut short in March 1995 when she was murdered by Yolanda Saldívar, the president of her fan club. At just 23 years old, Selena’s death shocked fans and the music community alike. Saldívar is currently incarcerated, having been denied parole on multiple occasions.

In the wake of his daughter’s death, Abraham Quintanilla took significant steps to preserve her legacy. He served as an executive producer for the 1997 biographical film “Selena,” which starred Jennifer Lopez and depicted the life and influence of his daughter. Additionally, a recent Netflix documentary titled “Selena y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy” featured exclusive home videos and archival footage, showcasing the Quintanilla family’s enduring impact on music and culture. The family also collaborated with Netflix on “Selena: The Series,” a dramatization of Selena’s remarkable life and career.

Abraham Quintanilla’s contributions to the music industry, particularly through his daughter’s groundbreaking achievements, will be remembered as a central part of Tejano music history. His dedication not only to his family but to fostering the talent that defined Selena’s career positions him as a pivotal figure in the cultural landscape of the genre.
