Wenne Alton Davis, a 61-year-old actress known for her roles in acclaimed television shows such as “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Blindspot,” tragically lost her life in an accident involving a Cadillac SUV in Midtown Manhattan on Monday. Davis, whose real name was Wendy Davis, had expressed excitement about her recent auditions and aspirations to return to the stand-up comedy stage, according to long-time friend Joanna Briley.
Just days prior to the fatal incident, Davis had participated in a promising audition for a commercial, where she was set to portray a director. Briley recounted how enthusiastic Davis was, eagerly anticipating good news from her audition. The tragic circumstances of her death have cast a shadow over what should have been a moment of celebration for the aspiring artist.
The incident occurred around 9 p.m. as Davis attempted to cross Broadway near West 53rd Street. Witnesses reported that the driver of a black Cadillac XT6 SUV struck her while making a turn. Following the accident, Davis was quickly rushed to Mount Sinai West Hospital, where she succumbed to severe head injuries. Her passing occurred less than four blocks from iconic landmarks such as Radio City Music Hall and the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree.
Describing the evening of the accident, a neighbor indicated that Davis had intended to meet friends for dinner, likely to share her recent audition success. Briley reflected on their friendship that thrived during challenging times in their careers, saying they bonded over the pursuit of acting while holding down civil service jobs—Davis as a customs officer at JFK Airport and Briley working as an MTA token booth clerk.
Davis’ agency, Clear Talent Group, remembered her as a vibrant individual who exemplified kindness and warmth. Jamie Harris, a senior vice president with the agency, expressed shock at the news of her passing, stating that many in her network are struggling to come to terms with the loss.
Outside of her acting career, Davis enjoyed boxing and was an active member of the JFK Customs hockey team. Her colleagues from the team shared their condolences on social media, noting the depth of the loss felt across their community.
The actress had nurtured her passion for comedy from a young age after relocating to New York City from North Carolina. Recently, she had shared her desire to return to stand-up, affirming her dedication to the craft.
