Additional police will be deployed in Times Square for the 2026 New Year’s Eve celebration.

As New York City prepares for the annual New Year’s Eve celebration at Times Square, the New York Police Department (NYPD) is gearing up to enhance security measures significantly. The event, which draws over one million revelers to celebrate the incoming year, will see a substantial increase in police presence compared to previous years, according to recent statements from city officials.

During a press conference held in Times Square, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, accompanied by Mayor Eric Adams, announced that the NYPD plans to implement a new secondary screening process for attendees waiting in designated viewing pens ahead of the iconic ball drop. This initiative is part of a broader plan to ensure public safety during what is considered the largest celebratory event in the United States.

While the NYPD’s Intelligence and Counterterrorism bureaus have reported no credible threats to the Times Square celebration, Tisch indicated that additional officers will conduct a secondary screening of individuals within the pens if any unusual activity is observed. Mobile screening teams will patrol the area to address any concerns proactively.

Entrance procedures will be refined with the goal of streamlining the screening process, particularly for alcohol and prohibited items as guests arrive at Times Square. Tisch emphasized that although she cannot disclose the exact number of officers deployed, the entire NYPD will be on high alert during the festivities.

In addition to uniformed officers, a range of specialized units will be actively involved in security operations, including transit officers, mounted patrols, harbor units, drone operators, and canine teams. Mayor Adams highlighted the importance of preparedness in light of a heightened threat environment and acknowledged the right to protest while asserting that any demonstrations should not interfere with the New Year’s Eve celebrations.

City officials are also prepared for potential challenges, deploying dedicated teams focused on addressing pickpocketing and general public safety concerns, as well as intelligence teams monitoring social media for any warning signs of disruption.

As the countdown to midnight approaches, police and city officials are committed to ensuring a safe and festive environment for all attendees. The celebration not only marks the end of the year but also serves as a significant moment for New Yorkers, including Mayor Adams, who reflects on the event’s personal importance, having been sworn in as mayor during a similar celebration just a few years prior.

Given these enhanced safety measures, the NYPD aims to make the New Year’s Eve event in Times Square not only enjoyable but also secure for everyone involved.
