Afghan village devastated by falling stones in a recent incident.

In the small village of Aurak Dandila, remnants of what once constituted homes are now reduced to piles of stones and debris. Following a devastating earthquake, the tranquil landscape has become a site of profound loss and grief. Several residents, including Mehboob, recounted harrowing experiences during that fateful night.
Mehboob, a father of two, described a chaotic scene as he sought to protect his 13-year-old son, Nasib Ullah, when the ground beneath them trembled violently. He articulated the overwhelming fear as the walls crumbled around him, stating, “When the earthquake happened, I couldn’t find my son amidst the falling rocks.” Tragically, both his son and 10-year-old daughter, Aisha, were among the many casualties of the disaster. Reflecting on the fragility of life, he expressed, “It felt like the worst moment of my life.”
That night, the village endured a barrage of over 250 aftershocks, an unsettling reality that has persisted even weeks after the initial quake. Villagers worked tirelessly, night and day, in their quest to uncover the lost, but emotions ran high as they reckoned with reality. “I could see my son’s foot, but everything else was buried,” Mehboob recalled, detailing the moment he realized the magnitude of their loss.
The human spirit, however, has manifested in resilience and community solidarity. When news of the tragedy reached family members like Rahmat Gul, who lives approximately 300 kilometers away, they rushed to assist those affected. “When I arrived, the villagers asked me to help wrap Mehboob’s son. It was a moment filled with deep sorrow,” Rahmat shared, illustrating the compassion that persists in their community.
Despite the overwhelming sense of despair, there remains a thread of hope as the villagers contemplate their future. Hayat, another affected resident, stands amidst the debris, pondering the fate of their village. “There is nothing left to live here for; the stones are coming from above,” he lamented, emphasizing the importance of finding a safer place to settle.
The community is now contemplating relocation as they seek mercy and support from higher powers to guide their future. The village, once alive with laughter and normalcy, now serves as a poignant reminder of resilience, loss, and the enduring bonds of community amid tragedy.
As the residents of Aurak Dandila begin to navigate their new reality, the journey towards healing and recovery underscores the strength found in unity and hope for brighter days ahead, as they strive to rebuild their lives, one step at a time.
