Alumnus to Perform at Whittier’s Patriotic Concert Celebrating America’s 250th Anniversary
Whittier, CA – The Whittier High School Alumni Association and Education Foundation is set to host a special concert and singalong celebrating the Fourth of July and the 250th anniversary of America’s independence. Scheduled for June 27 at 2 p.m., the event will take place at the Vic Lopez Auditorium located at Whittier High School, 12417 Philadelphia St. This concert will feature a distinguished lineup, including renowned pianist Robert York and esteemed vocalist Josè Luis Maldonado, both Whittier High alumni.
The concert aims to promote community engagement and to provide a platform for appreciating American history through music. The performance will highlight the historic Wurlitzer Organ, constructed in 1926, which has become a centerpiece for local musical events since its installation in the auditorium in 2017, thanks to significant donations from Bill Wood and Dave Harris.
Robert York will entertain attendees with a captivating selection of Sousa marches, Joplin ragtime, and a medley of movie soundtracks. Meanwhile, vocalist Josè Luis Maldonado will showcase his award-winning baritone talent, performing notable pieces such as “Ol’ Man River” and “Shenandoah,” along with original compositions written specifically for him.
Teachers and alumni alike express excitement about the event, which connects the community through shared cultural experiences. Sarah Peel, a Whittier educator and fourth-generation resident, remarked on the significance of celebrating in the beloved auditorium, indicating that the occasion will serve as a unique opportunity for the community to come together in honor of America’s storied past.
In addition to outstanding musical performances, the program will include readings of historical poetry and significant documents. Peel will read works by John Greenleaf Whittier, and Whittier Mayor James Becerra is set to recite the Declaration of Independence. The ceremony will also feature a flag ceremony led by Rob West, association president, alongside local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops.
Tickets for the event are priced at for adults, for children and youth, while current Whittier High students can attend free of charge. Tickets are available for purchase until June 23 online at whittierhighalumni.org, or at the door in cash on the day of the concert.
