Amazon to Launch Drone Delivery Service in South Jersey, According to Local Officials
Amazon is poised to revolutionize its delivery service in South Jersey by launching an autonomous drone delivery program from its West Deptford facility, as confirmed by local officials, including Mayor James Mehaffey and Police Chief William Murphy. This initiative is set to roll out this fall and is part of Amazon’s broader ambitions to enhance its Prime Air service, which aims for faster and more efficient delivery methods.
This announcement comes on the heels of Amazon’s recent expansion of its drone delivery program, which currently operates in eleven cities across the United States, with no presence in the Northeast until now. By the end of the year, Amazon plans to extend its delivery network to nearly 500 cities, providing tens of millions of customers with the possibility of having packages delivered within a 30-minute to one-hour window.
The strategic goal behind this initiative is to maintain Amazon’s position as the leading online retailer and to enhance delivery efficiencies amidst increasing competition. In May, the company announced a 30-minute ground delivery service in Philadelphia, further underscoring its commitment to reducing delivery times.

The West Deptford warehouse, a 650,000-square-foot facility situated near Interstate 295, has been operational since 2018 and serves as one of Amazon’s significant robotic fulfillment centers. The drones, designed to operate within a 15-mile radius, can typically deliver items weighing up to five pounds, including popular consumer products and groceries, to homes from Bellmawr to Mullica Hill, and parts of South Philadelphia.
Operational guidelines state that the drones will function under Federal Aviation Administration regulations, flying from 15 minutes before sunrise to 15 minutes after sunset at altitudes below 400 feet. Local residents have expressed concerns regarding privacy and the environmental impact of the drones, prompting over 100 individuals to sign a petition for public hearings on the matter. Despite these concerns, Amazon assures customers that the drones are designed to emit minimal noise and have no capability to track individuals.
Residents within the delivery radius will be able to select their preferred drop-off locations when ordering from Amazon, with Prime members enjoying complimentary delivery for orders over . Non-members can still access the service for a fee.
