Authorities identify attacker and seven of the eight victims in last week’s mass shooting in Erie.
A tragic mass shooting incident occurred in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Friday, resulting in the deaths of eight individuals, including several members of the perpetrator’s family. The shooter, identified as Matthew Stone Sr., aged 45, subsequently took his own life at the scene of the crime. The Erie County coroner, Lyell Cook, confirmed the identities of the victims, revealing that seven of them were related to Stone.
The adult victims included Michelle Stone, 44; Angelina Stone, 24, who was expecting a child; Jonathan Stone, 19; and Matthew Stone, 21. Additionally, two women, Lora Roberts, 37, and Twila Tanner, 51, were also among the deceased. Tragically, a 5-year-old boy and a 1-year-old girl were also killed in the attack, though state law prohibits the release of their names at this time.
During a memorial service for the victims, family friend Julius Windham disclosed that the young girl, Amarianna, was the daughter of Angelina Stone. Windham highlighted the complex family dynamics, noting that the shooter was the children’s grandfather and the family patriarch. This incident has sent shockwaves throughout the community and raised profound questions about family relationships and the circumstances leading up to such a violent act.
Lora Roberts, a victim who was known for her commitment to helping others, frequently offered support during Angelina Stone’s pregnancy. Friends described Roberts as a devoted mother of five who had plans to marry soon. She was active in community efforts to assist homeless individuals, and her social media posts indicated her deep concern for escalating violence in Erie, reflecting on the sanctity of life and urging community members to spread kindness.
Investigators have reported that video and audio evidence gathered from the scene captured muffled gunfire moments before two women arrived in distress, knocking on the door for help. Tragically, as they attempted to flee, the shooter emerged and opened fire on them before retreating inside. Roberts and Tanner sustained fatal injuries outside the home.
While the investigation is still ongoing, Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah mentioned that mental health considerations may have played a role in the circumstances surrounding this horrific event. Authorities plan to interview relatives of the victims and analyze phone records to gain deeper insight into the situation.
Erie, located approximately 120 miles north of Pittsburgh, mourns a devastating loss that has shattered families and communities alike, prompting dialogue about mental health resources, gun violence, and familial relationships.
