BalletX Summer Series Introduces New Dance Genre, Surprising Audiences with Innovative Performances.
BalletX, a prominent contemporary ballet company, has kicked off its summer series at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre, marking a noteworthy event in Philadelphia’s arts calendar. Known as a vital cultural offering during the dance community’s off-season, this year’s series showcases an array of performances that highlight the company’s innovative spirit and artistic ambition.
The opening night featured three distinct pieces, including a world premiere by this year’s choreographic fellow, Noelle Kayser, who collaborated with mentor Marguerite Donlon. Titled “Scales on the Wings of a Butterfly,” the premiere draws inspiration from the intricate beauty of microscopic photography and videography, shedding light on the often-overlooked aspects of nature. The choreography, set to a captivating score by composer Jeff Kolar, evokes the fluid movements and patterns of insects and cellular life. Dancers donned vibrant costumes designed by Amanda Gladu, successfully creating an immersive visual experience. Kayser’s use of pointe shoes marked her first foray into this technique, adding a level of sophistication and elegance that defined the piece.
The program also included a work-in-progress premiere titled “Petrushka,” choreographed by Amy Hall Garner. This interpretation reimagines the narrative of the well-known ballet originally choreographed by Mikhail Fokin in 1911. Garner, in collaboration with artistic partner Nancy Meckler, locates the story within a traveling show context, thus providing a fresh perspective on the classic tale. The choreography reflects a more traditional ballet style, showcasing the dancers’ versatility and artistic range. Peter Weil’s portrayal of Petrushka stood out, demonstrating exceptional artistry and physicality.
Rounding out the evening was “The Last Glass,” a signature piece by BalletX co-founder Matthew Neenan. Created in 2010, this work continues to resonate due to its playful exploration of character dynamics set against the backdrop of a vibrant street fair. Neenan’s choreography remains stirring and captures the essence of contemporary life while being paired with songs by the indie-rock band Beirut.
BalletX’s summer series runs through Sunday, presenting an opportunity for audiences to engage with both new and established works that reflect the company’s dedication to artistic exploration.
