Ben Franklin Bridge to close to vehicle traffic in July for anniversary celebration.

The Ben Franklin Bridge, an iconic structure connecting Philadelphia and Camden, will temporarily close to vehicular traffic on July 11 in honor of its 100th anniversary, as announced by the Delaware River Port Authority. This closure is anticipated to facilitate pedestrian access, although specific timing details have yet to be released.

Mike Williams, a spokesperson for the authority, noted that the celebration is expected to span several hours, allowing visitors to commemorate the centennial of the bridge through a variety of festivities. Activities will include live music, performances, food trucks, and carnival rides, offering a festive atmosphere for attendees. Additionally, a pop-up museum featuring exhibits and artifacts related to the bridge’s history will be available for public engagement. The main celebratory events are set to occur on the Camden side of the bridge, near the toll plaza.

This is not the first occasion the Ben Franklin Bridge has closed for special events. Previously, the structure was shut down for its 75th anniversary in 2001 and also experienced temporary closures during Pope Francis’ visit to the area in 2015. Such events, while significant, may serve as a logistical challenge for the large number of commuters who rely on this vital transportation link. Annually, more than 34 million vehicles use the bridge, translating to an average of 94,000 vehicles per day, making the timing of the closure particularly consequential as it coincides with peak travel periods for the Jersey Shore season. In case of inclement weather, the rain date for the activities has been designated as Sunday, July 12.

Constructed in 1926, the Ben Franklin Bridge spans 1.8 miles and was initially named the Delaware River Bridge. At one time, it held the title of the longest suspension bridge in the world. As the Delaware River Port Authority celebrates this historic milestone, it emphasizes the bridge’s significance as more than just a physical structure, but rather as a vital symbol of connectivity for the communities it serves. The bridge has played a crucial role in facilitating the movement of people and goods across the Delaware River for a century, and the upcoming festivities are intended to honor that legacy.
