Berks County woman finds hidden camera in bathroom, leading to further alarming discoveries. She is now sharing her experience.
In Douglassville, Pennsylvania, a deeply unsettling case of abuse and betrayal has come to light, illustrating the urgent need for awareness around such issues. Stacey Rutherford learned in 2021 that her second husband, Justin Rutherford, a physician affiliated with Reading’s Tower Health, had surreptitiously installed a hidden camera in their bathroom. This invasive measure captured numerous images of individuals in vulnerable situations, including showering and changing clothes.
In 2024, Justin Rutherford was sentenced to a substantial prison term of 26 years and 10 months to 70 years after being convicted of several grave sexual offenses, including the rape of a child and rape of an unconscious victim. Among the victims was Rutherford’s own teenage son, Tyler VanScyoc. Additionally, while incarcerated, Justin Rutherford was handed a separate 5- to 10-year sentence for conspiring to murder Tyler.
Throughout the tumultuous legal process, Stacey Rutherford initially chose to maintain silence regarding her family’s painful experiences. However, she recently decided to break that silence, emphasizing the significance of sharing their story. This narrative unfolds further in the documentary series “Betrayal: Under His Eye,” produced by ABC News Studios and currently available for streaming on Hulu.
Stacey and Tyler VanScyoc participated in the documentary, which explores themes of abuse and recovery. Tyler remarked on the therapeutic aspects of revisiting their experiences, stating that discussing trauma has been crucial to their healing journey. Before engaging with the documentary project, he admitted that discussing such issues with his mother was difficult, underscoring the complexities of family relationships in the aftermath of trauma.
Their involvement in the series, which also includes a related podcast, has fostered an environment of openness between mother and son, enabling them to confront their past collaboratively. Tyler noted the importance of such conversations, believing they serve as a catalyst for genuine healing and connection.
Stacey Rutherford expressed that these dialogues revealed the multifaceted nature of sexual abuse and highlighted the necessity of recognizing and addressing the perpetrator’s responsibility. While grappling with feelings of guilt over her inability to protect her son, she underscored the need for survivors to grant themselves compassion and to shift the focus to those who commit such crimes.
Tyler VanScyoc hopes that their story will inspire other survivors of sexual abuse to find the courage to speak out and engage in difficult conversations with loved ones. He believes that through these dialogues, true healing can begin. “Betrayal: Under His Eye” is available for streaming on Hulu and Hulu with Disney+, offering insights into the experiences of those affected by trauma and the importance of resilience.
