Billy Joel to Close Oyster Bay Motorcycle Shop Due to Health Concerns

Billy Joel, the renowned musician and Long Island native, is set to close his motorcycle shop, 20th Century Cycles, located in Oyster Bay. This decision comes on the heels of his recent diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus, a neurological condition characterized by an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. Joel’s health issues have necessitated a reevaluation of his professional commitments, leading to the cancellation of upcoming concerts as he prioritizes his well-being.

The closure of 20th Century Cycles is scheduled for late September. Following the shop’s closure, Joel plans to auction off his impressive collection of motorcycles, which encompasses over 75 rare and valuable models. This collection includes iconic brands such as Harley-Davidson, Triumph, and Ducati, highlighted by a 1952 Vincent Rapide, a motorcycle whose value is estimated in the tens of thousands of dollars. Joel opened the motorcycle shop in 2010 with the intention of sharing his passion for vintage motorcycles with the public, allowing patrons to view his collection at no cost while also providing maintenance and customization services.

The area surrounding the shop was recently recognized when a section of the street was renamed Billy Joel Way in 2023, signifying the musician’s strong ties to the community. Local business owners and residents have expressed their sentiments regarding the impending closure, emphasizing the shop’s status as a destination for both motorcycle enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. Ted Bahr, who operates a vintage rock poster gallery nearby, remarked on the significance of Joel’s establishment in the community, noting that it attracted a steady stream of visitors on weekends.

In addition to closing his motorcycle shop, Joel is also in the process of selling his Oyster Bay estate and plans to relocate to Florida. While the exact date for the motorcycle auction has yet to be determined, the sale is anticipated to draw considerable interest from collectors and fans alike.

As Billy Joel navigates this challenging chapter in his life, his resilience and enduring connection to his Long Island roots continue to resonate with both his local community and a global audience.
