Cosenza indicated that the closure is expected to be temporary, stemming from a “communication breakdown” related to the status of a Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition he filed in May—his second filing in recent years. Surprising even to him, the Bistro was locked out when his brother attempted to open it, unaware that the bankruptcy petition had been converted to a Chapter 7, typically involving asset liquidation.

This sudden closure has left a void for many loyal patrons, as evidenced by an outpouring of disbelief and sadness on various social media platforms. One loyal customer, Maura Aguilar, described the Bistro as an integral part of her mall visits, attributing its significance not only to the quality of food but also to the community atmosphere it cultivated.

The Bistro has reportedly been in good standing in terms of customer loyalty and revenue, generating millions annually. However, as the court documents reveal, the restaurant faced significant financial challenges, primarily linked to its rental obligations. Cosenza acknowledged an outstanding debt of approximately 0,000, predominantly owed to PREIT, the owner of Cherry Hill Mall, although he emphasized that this was not due to mismanagement or negligence.

The ongoing legal situation has led PREIT to seek recovery of over 5,000 in unpaid rents and additional fees, which has compounded the Bistro’s difficulties during a challenging retail landscape exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, many establishments, including the Cherry Hill Mall, were forced to shut their doors temporarily.

Looking toward the future, the Bistro’s leadership remains cautiously optimistic. As Cosenza prepares for a court hearing on August 12 regarding the bankruptcy case, he expresses a strong desire to reopen and continue serving the community that holds the establishment so dearly. Despite the hardships faced, he has expressed determination, stating he has set aside funds in his will to ensure the Bistro’s longevity.
