Body found in Hudson River close to Battery Park
First responders recovered the body of a deceased man from the Hudson River on Monday afternoon, according to law enforcement officials. Emergency dispatchers received a 911 call reporting the presence of a body in the water at approximately 3:01 p.m., prompting a swift response from local authorities.
The body was located near Battery Park, where officials found the unidentified male unconscious and unresponsive. Members of the NYPD Harbor Unit entered the water to retrieve the body. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel pronounced the individual dead at the scene.
The specific duration for which the body had been submerged in the river remains unclear, and investigators have not yet determined whether there are any criminal implications associated with the case. An official investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death is currently underway.
As per standard procedure, the Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to ascertain the cause of death. In the interest of public safety and transparency, authorities are encouraging anyone with information related to this incident to contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. All calls made to this service are confidential.
The recovery of this body follows a troubling incident from February of this year, when a dismembered torso was discovered inside a suitcase floating in the East River. This grim find occurred near Governors Island and led to the swift involvement of the NYPD Harbor Unit, which transported the suitcase to Pier 16 in Manhattan’s Financial District. Later investigations revealed that the suitcase contained the remains of 65-year-old Edwin Echevarria, who had been murdered in a particularly brutal manner. The suspect in that case, Christian Millet, 23, was apprehended and charged with Echevarria’s murder. Investigators alleged that Millet had disposed of various body parts in different bags, which were then cast into the East River.
As police continue their examination of the recent discovery in the Hudson River, the community remains on edge. The juxtaposition of these two incidents highlights ongoing public concerns regarding safety and criminal activity in New York City’s waterways. Authorities are maintaining vigilance as they seek to resolve the current investigation and clarify the circumstances surrounding this latest tragedy.
