Boy rescued after falling into frozen pond in New York on Christmas Day
A recent incident in East Patchogue, Long Island, highlights the potential dangers associated with winter activities on frozen bodies of water. On Christmas Day, an 8-year-old boy fell into a thinly frozen pond while playing, prompting a swift response from local law enforcement.
The incident occurred at the Heatherwood Lakeside Village apartment complex. According to the Suffolk County Police Department, the boy was reportedly playing on an ice-covered portion of the pond when the surface gave way beneath him, leaving him trapped in the frigid water up to his chest. The situation escalated when a resident of the area observed the child in distress and promptly called 911.
Upon arrival, Fifth Precinct officers James Rizzo and Andrew Tirelli took immediate action. They entered the icy water to reach the child while facilitating the use of a life ring. Simultaneously, Highway Sergeant Michael Santillo navigated across the ice to rescue the boy from the water. Their combined efforts ensured that the child was safely pulled from the pond.
Following the rescue, emergency responders transported the boy to NYU Langone Hospital-Suffolk in Patchogue for further evaluation. While fortunately unreported injuries were noted, officers provided no additional information regarding the child’s condition later in the day.
On the day of the incident, temperatures in East Patchogue hovered around 46 degrees Fahrenheit, with nighttime lows expected to drop below freezing. The fluctuating temperatures contribute to the precarious conditions of ice-covered bodies of water, which can create risks for children and adults alike.
