Brea Olinda football secures decisive victory against Marina in season opener.
In the season opening game held on August 21, 2026, the Brea Olinda Wildcats demonstrated their determination to reclaim their place in the CIF-SS football finals with a decisive 35-14 victory over the Marina Vikings at Westminster High School. After a challenging previous season ending in an overtime defeat in the CIF-SS finals, the Wildcats came into this game with a clear mission to start strong.
Brea Olinda’s performance was highlighted by an impressive showing from their special teams, which accounted for two key touchdowns. The first came from a blocked punt recovered and returned by Josef Morris, who took advantage of a fortunate bounce to score from 40 yards out. This pivotal play set the tone early in the match and underscored the Wildcats’ emphasis on a well-rounded game that values contributions from all units.
Running back Nick Davis was a standout player, propelling the team with a forceful display that included three carries for 53 yards, capped by an 18-yard touchdown run that opened the scoring. Quarterback Gavyn Nicholson, despite completing only one pass for the game, was instrumental in another touchdown play. He launched a short pass that turned into a remarkable 69-yard touchdown reception by Ryan Chang, extending the lead to 21-0 just before halftime.
The Vikings broke through in the third quarter when running back Ben Ramos scored an 11-yard touchdown, reducing the deficit to 21-7. However, Brea Olinda responded promptly with a kickoff return for a touchdown from Cole Pfeiffer, further asserting their dominance with a 28-7 advantage.
Marina’s coach, Charlie TeGantvoort, expressed recognition of the challenges faced during the game, acknowledging the inexperience of his young squad while also praising their effort against a seasoned opponent that has been a CIF runner-up. Quarterback Maverick Coverick, a new transfer from Huntington Beach, passed for 189 yards and one touchdown in his first start, but his performance was marred by two interceptions. TeGantvoort remained optimistic about Coverick’s potential as a leader, comparing him to past standout quarterbacks at Marina.
Brea Olinda’s coach, Justin Villasenor, emphasized the need for continuous hard work as they aim to return to the CIF championship. His message to the team was clear: they must focus on each game without losing sight of their goal to compete for the title once again. The Wildcats established a strong message of intent with this opening game, laying down a marker for the season ahead as they pursue their championship aspirations.
As the season progresses, both teams will look to refine their strategies and build on their performances. Brea Olinda will seek to carry this momentum forward, while Marina is poised to learn from this experience as they develop their young roster.
