The break-in occurred overnight when an unknown individual pried open a back window, shattering the glass and creating a new crime scene, the police reported. At this stage of the investigation, it appears the home was searched, but preliminary assessments indicated that the family did not believe any items were taken.

Authorities have called for public assistance in the ongoing investigation, urging nearby residents to review their surveillance footage for any signs of the intruder. While a police camera was directed at the front of the property, officials have not confirmed whether any suspect images were captured.

Hortman and her husband were fatally shot early Saturday morning by a suspect who approached their home disguised as a police officer. The shooter, identified as 57-year-old Vance Boelter, had reportedly targeted multiple locations prior to arriving at the Hortman residence, culminating in a spree that also impacted the home of State Senator John Hoffman and his wife. The Hoffmans sustained multiple gunshot wounds but survived, expressing their relief to be alive.

Boelter was apprehended on Sunday night following an extensive two-day manhunt and is currently being held on a million bond as he awaits a court appearance scheduled for June 27.
