Bronx judge relaxes release conditions for teenager charged with gun possession.
A Bronx judge has made significant adjustments to the release conditions of an 18-year-old, Josue Lopez-Vasquez, who is facing criminal charges in relation to a violent incident involving alleged assailants who crashed into his minivan while fleeing from a mass shooting. During a recent hearing in Bronx Criminal Court, approximately 20 family members, including aunts, grandparents, cousins, and parents, attended in a show of support for Lopez-Vasquez.
His father, Adalberto Santiago, expressed a desire to expedite the legal proceedings, stating that his son is innocent and should not face any further courtroom delays. Santiago underscored the family’s hopes to avoid extended days in court, emphasizing their belief in Lopez-Vasquez’s complete innocence and their unwillingness to subject him to a protracted judicial process.
Judge Linda Lopez ultimately ruled that Lopez-Vasquez would be released on his own recognizance instead of requiring supervised release with frequent check-ins. The judge highlighted the strong family support system surrounding the young man, suggesting that such backing would ensure his court appearances would not be an issue.
Santiago shared his relief at the judge’s decision, stating that the previous requirement for supervised release felt unnecessary for someone of Lopez-Vasquez’s background. Specifically, he noted that his son had never been involved in any criminal situations prior to this incident.
Lopez-Vasquez was arrested after officers responded to a shooting incident on September 1, which left one person dead and four others injured. Upon their arrival at St. Barnabas Hospital, authorities found a magazine containing two .45-caliber hollow-point rounds on the dashboard of Lopez-Vasquez’s Dodge Caravan. Additionally, a semi-automatic pistol was discovered lying beneath the vehicle.
The arrest followed a high-stakes chase involving the alleged gunmen who had reportedly exited a Honda and fired into a crowd at a smoke shop approximately half a mile away from where the crash occurred. The incident took place at the intersection of Arnow and Hone Avenues in Allerton.
Despite the turmoil surrounding the events, Lopez-Vasquez conveyed a sense of determination in the courthouse corridor, affirming his belief that he and his family would navigate through this challenging ordeal together.
