Bronx teen injured while protecting mother from boyfriend’s attack receives commendation from family.

In a tragic incident in the Bronx, a 16-year-old boy sustained serious injuries while attempting to rescue his mother, Yesenia Hall, from a fatal attack by her longtime boyfriend. The confrontation occurred early Saturday morning in their third-floor apartment located on Sherman Avenue near East 163rd Street.

According to prosecutors, the teenage son heard his mother’s screams and rushed into the bedroom, where he found his mother’s 45-year-old boyfriend, Juan Rivas, armed with a knife. In a desperate attempt to protect his mother, the teenager moved to intervene but was attacked by Rivas, who inflicted multiple stab wounds, targeting the boy’s neck, shoulder, and cheek. Tragically, Rivas then turned the weapon on Hall, fatally stabbing her in the chest.

Hall’s brother Edwin Maldonado, a commercial airline pilot and retired Army officer, spoke about the bravery of his nephew, emphasizing that the teen’s actions were motivated by a desire to save his mother. Following the assault, Hall’s son was rushed to Lincoln Hospital, where he underwent surgery and is currently in stable condition, albeit unable to speak due to the severity of his neck injury. Family members reported that he is communicating through writing as he recovers.

The aftermath of the incident was chaotic; Hall’s adult daughter called 911 during the attack, but Rivas fled the scene. He was apprehended later at a local hospital, where he sought treatment for his own injuries. During his arraignment at Bronx Criminal Court on Sunday, Rivas was denied bail. Prosecutors revealed that Rivas has a history of domestic violence incidents involving Hall and a prior criminal record that includes multiple charges, leading to serious concerns about his capacity for rehabilitation.

Neighbors described Rivas as aggressive and possessive, indicating that he had a volatile nature that often escalated into violent altercations with Hall. Despite these red flags, Hall continued to support Rivas, even encouraging him to seek therapy. Hall, who had been dealing with health issues, was a dedicated mother to her three children and recently pursued education as a medical biller to better her family’s circumstances.

Family members expressed their heartbreak over the loss of Hall, who they portrayed as a caring and vibrant individual, deeply committed to her children’s well-being. The emotional toll on the family is significant, particularly for the children who now face the consequences of this violent event. The community is left grappling with the tragic fallout and the lingering questions about domestic violence and its impacts.

As the investigation continues, the family has called for greater awareness and action regarding domestic violence, emphasizing that no one should endure such terror within their own home.
