Brooklyn teenager killed two days after friend’s murder in suspected retaliation shooting.

In a tragic turn of events in Brooklyn, a 17-year-old boy, Tamari Carmon, was fatally shot just two days after attending a memorial for his friend, 18-year-old Javon Johnnie, who had been killed in a gun-related incident. The shooting occurred early in the morning of April 29 at approximately 12:30 a.m., outside the Flatbush Gardens apartment complex. According to police reports, Tamari was confronted by three men dressed in black while walking near the intersection of Brooklyn Avenue and Foster Avenue. He was shot in the head and succumbed to his injuries two days later at Kings County Hospital.

Family members described Tamari as a vibrant young man who was contemplating his future, having expressed interest in attending college and securing a job that promised a wage of per hour. Prior to the shooting, he had been lighting memorial candles for his friend Javon at a makeshift memorial site. Witnesses indicated that Tamari’s death was likely a retaliatory act linked to Javon’s murder, which occurred on April 27, just blocks from their homes.

Javon Johnnie had recently been involved in a violent incident, having been shot in the chest while carrying a firearm near W. 36th Street and Surf Avenue. Despite being rushed to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn for emergency treatment, he did not survive. Law enforcement sources indicated that Javon was a prominent figure within the Coney Island Brims gang, which raised concerns about potential retaliatory violence following his death.

According to police records, Javon had an extensive criminal history, including ten arrests, nine of which were felonies. He was also considered a person of interest in two previous nonfatal shootings. Earlier in his life, he faced serious charges related to a stabbing incident involving a 17-year-old in early 2023, although those charges were later dismissed.

With both murders shocking the local community, police have not yet made any arrests, and the investigation remains ongoing. Tamari’s family is left grappling with the loss of two young lives in a single weekend, reflecting broader issues related to youth violence in urban areas. The outpouring of grief from friends and family underscores the tragedy of lost potential and the ripple effect of gang-related violence that continues to plague neighborhoods across the city.
