The conflict began when D’Angelo, suffering from Crohn’s disease, faced severe health challenges, including seizures and intense bowel pain. In light of her condition, her neighbor, Catherine Feijoo-Nickell, volunteered to dog-sit for Grace while D’Angelo sought treatment. However, after taking possession of the dog, Feijoo-Nickell refused to return Grace, claiming she intended to keep the pet.
The situation escalated when Feijoo-Nickell requested Grace’s papers, suggesting plans for grooming while simultaneously asserting her intent to keep the dog permanently. D’Angelo, who adopted Grace in 2018 as a source of companionship following the tragic loss of her son, vehemently denied ever agreeing to give up her pet. This escalation led to D’Angelo filing a lawsuit in the Kings County Supreme Court, arguing that Feijoo-Nickell had effectively taken her dog, exploiting her vulnerable state.
