Bucks County DA investigates Quakertown police after arresting high school students during ICE protest.

The Bucks County District Attorney’s office has launched an investigation into the Quakertown Borough Police Department’s response during a recent protest held by students from Quakertown High School. The protest, which took place on Friday, was organized to demonstrate against the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and resulted in a confrontation that left at least one teenager injured and in handcuffs.

Bucks County District Attorney spokesperson Manuel Gamiz, Jr. stated that the investigation aims to ensure a thorough and transparent review of the police response. The district attorney’s office has urged community members to come forward with any relevant information, including video footage or photographs of the incident, which can be submitted directly to Bucks County Detectives at 215-348-6354.

Witnesses captured video footage of the altercation, which showed interactions among police officers, adults, and students on a sidewalk along Front Street. In a widely circulated clip, a confrontation ensued where teenagers appeared to be in a physical struggle with a man, later identified as Quakertown Police Chief Scott McElree, who was seen placing one of the students in a chokehold. As of Saturday morning, both the Quakertown Police Department and Chief McElree had not responded to requests for further comment.

Initial reports from the Quakertown Borough Police indicated that five or six minors, along with one adult, were taken into custody during the incident. However, specifics regarding the identities or circumstances surrounding those arrests have not been disclosed, with police alleging that the students were engaging in violent behavior.

In the wake of the incident, a number of parents and civil rights advocates convened outside the Quakertown Borough Police Station, calling for accountability and clarifications from law enforcement. Adrienne King, president of the Bucks County NAACP, emphasized the importance of high standards of care and restraint when engaging with young individuals, stating that transparency is essential in all scenarios involving police encounters with minors.

Family members of one of the detained students have released a statement expressing their desire for accountability from both the Quakertown police and the school district. They are seeking justice for their child and the other students involved, advocating for their immediate release.

The situation remains fluid, and further developments are anticipated as the inquiry progresses. Community members are encouraged to stay informed as new details emerge regarding this significant local incident.
