California leaders seek federal emergency declaration due to chemical threat in Garden Grove.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has formally requested a federal emergency declaration in response to the ongoing crisis surrounding a chemical storage tank at GKN Aerospace in Garden Grove. This tank, containing approximately 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate, poses a significant threat of a chemical spill or explosion that could inflict widespread damage on nearby homes and create a toxic atmospheric hazard.
Since Thursday, experts alongside emergency response teams have been working diligently to address the potential risks associated with the tank. In light of the escalating situation, Newsom’s request emphasizes the need for federal support to implement “urgent, lifesaving and life-sustaining actions.” This encompasses necessary evacuations, emergency medical assistance, shelter provisions, and various protective operations aimed at safeguarding the local population.
The governor expressed the proactive stance California is taking to ensure community safety. Coordinating with local and federal partners, Newsom aims to bolster the state’s response capabilities in Garden Grove and surrounding areas. U.S. Senators Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff, along with Rep. Derek Tran, have also called on the federal government to expedite the approval of the emergency declaration. As of now, there has been no response from the White House regarding the emergency declaration. Zeldin indicated that while the tank is predicted to fail, work is underway to mitigate potential dangers to residents and emergency personnel.
The anticipated federal emergency declaration, as defined by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, would supplement state and local efforts to protect lives and property, and to reduce the threat of catastrophe. Newsom’s office noted that this declaration could facilitate critical emergency measures, including financial assistance for protective equipment and overtime for local agencies engaged in safety operations.
On Saturday, Newsom had declared a state of emergency for Orange County, unlocking additional resources for local officials to combat the ongoing crisis.
