In a statement released on Sunday, the Gambian government confirmed it was providing temporary sanctuary to Tchiroma on humanitarian grounds as it works towards a peaceful and diplomatic resolution amid escalating post-electoral unrest in Cameroon.

The statement, posted on the official Facebook page of Gambian President Adama Barrow, indicated that The Gambia is collaborating with regional partners such as Nigeria to foster discussions aimed at achieving a peaceful outcome amid the upheaval. The official results of the disputed election show 92-year-old Biya securing his eighth term with 53.7 percent of the vote, while Tchiroma, representing the Cameroon National Salvation Front, earned 35.2 percent. However, Tchiroma has vehemently contested the election results, alleging significant vote tampering and asserting his belief that he was the legitimate winner. He described the electoral process as “electoral theft” and called it a “constitutional coup as blatant as it is shameful.”

In response to the announced results, Tchiroma called upon his supporters to protest against what he deemed a flawed electoral procedure, advocating for “dead city” initiatives that would involve the closure of businesses and a halt to public activities. The unrest that followed resulted in tragic incidents; at least five individuals lost their lives during the protests, though opposition and civil society organizations claim the death toll is significantly higher.
